Phosphorus is a harmful impurity in most steels. But it has a special role in some cases. Adding phosphorus to cast iron can improve the fluidity of molten iron and thus improve the properties and surface quality of castings. Gray cast iron contains 0.5% phosphorus, which can increase its tensile strength. The wear-resistant cast iron contains about 0.15% phosphorus, which can significantly improve its wear resistance.
